Lucas Vazquez Besteiro

Openings

Doctoral student at Biomedical Research Centre (CINBIO), in University of Vigo.

This contract belongs within the project “LIGHTtoGAS: Multiscale Models for Plasmon Photocatalysis Engineering”, funded by the Spanish Ministry for Science and Innovation (Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación) under the “Research Challenges” call (Projectos I+D+I “Retos de Investigación”).

The selected candidate will join the TeamNanoTech research group and will work under the supervision of Lucas Vázquez Besteiro.

Description. The selected candidate will work on the computational modelling, using numerical methods in theoretical frameworks based on first principles, of chemical reactions of interest for the development of a sustainable society. The context of this project is the development of new theoretical methods to optimize photocatalytic strategies using nanostructures made with different materials, with the ultimate goal of efficiently using solar energy to drive chemical reactions. The student will work in a project with great scientific and technological potential, bridging research in physics and chemistry, and they will interact and collaborate with researchers with a diverse range of scientific backgrounds, both within CINBIO and internationally.

Desired profile. We seek a highly motivated student with a MSc in physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering or other scientific discipline requiring a significant training in mathematics, and with a competitive academic expedient. A good level of English (written and spoken) is required. Familiarity with Density Functional Theory and notions of quantum chemistry are not required, but will be preferred.

If the candidate is not a citizen of the European Union, they will be required to have a valid job permit by the time of the beginning of the contract.

Job conditions. Full-time contract (37.5 hours per week) with a gross monthly salary of 1.415 €. The initial duration of the contract is of 1 year, with the possibility of extending it. The contract is anticipated to begin in Jan. 1st 2023.

Selection. The selection process will be conducted by a committee composed by three researchers working at CINBIO.

The interested candidates should send a brief letter motivating their interest in the position, a complete CV in English and in pdf format, and contact information of two references to lucas.v.besteiro@uvigo.es before the end of October 29th, 2022.

About the centre. CINBIO is a multidisciplinary research institute hosting more than 200 researchers, between professors, postdocs, doctoral students and lab technicians. It was born of an investment stemming from University of Vigo’s mission to develop the field of biomedicine and biotechnology with a key differential element with other research centers of similar characteristics: its strong multidisciplinary nature. Our staff includes top level researchers in disciplines as varied as medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and computer science.

Besides its commitment to scientific excellence, CINBIO actively advocates gender equality. Its Equality Plan can be downloaded at https://cinbio.es/igualdade.

Multiple job openings. We seek and PhD students and postdocs for working in the development and characterization of nanostructured photocatalysts.

We seek candidates with experience in computational modelling, and candidates with experience in synthesis and characterization, to join a project studying the combination of plasmonic nanostructures with metalorganic frameworks to drive photocatalytic reactions with applications in energy generation and transport. The project “N2-AIRtoSOIL: Hybrid photocatalysts for solar-driven ammonia synthesis: plasmonic nanoparticles and single-atom catalysts combine in metal-organic frameworks” is funded by the Spanish Ministry for Science and Innovation (Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación) under the call “Ecological and Digital Transitions” (“Proyectos Orientados a la Transición Ecológica y a la Transición Digital”).

The selected candidates will join the TeamNanoTech research group (https://cinbio.es/en/research/groups/teamnanotech-tnt), in Biomedical Research Centre (CINBIO), and will work under the supervision of Lucas Vázquez Besteiro and Margarita Vázquez González.

Desired background for candidates

Common requirements: A good level of English (written and spoken). Capability of acquiring a visa for working in the EU.

PhD students, experimentalists: MSc in chemistry, material science or other scientific discipline requiring a significant training in chemistry, and with a competitive academic expedient. Knowledge in metal organic frameworks is not required but will be highly valuable.

PhD students, theoreticians: MSc in physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering or other scientific discipline requiring a significant training in mathematics, and with a competitive academic expedient. Familiarity with Density Functional Theory and notions of quantum chemistry are not required but will be preferred.

Postdoctoral researchers, experimentalists: Demonstrable research experience in heterogenous catalysis design with knowledge either in synthesis of metal organic frameworks or single atom catalyst.

Postdoctoral researchers, theoreticians: Demonstrable research experience in either first-principles simulations with DFT, ideally also using post-DFT formalisms modelling excited states, or modelling physical properties of plasmonic nanostructures through analytic or numerical methods.

Job conditions. Full-time contract (37.5 hours per week) with a gross monthly salary ranging from 1480 € to 2500 €, depending on experience. The initial duration of the contract is of 1 year, with the possibility of extending it. Anticipated starting date is Jan 1st, 2023.

Selection process. The selection process will be conducted officially by the University of Vigo to guarantee a transparent and open process.
